With all the news about looters and rioters attacking small businesses and even private homes last summer, a LOT of us are focused more than ever on home defense.
The dangers are only growing as more and more people lose their jobs… and get desperate.
It makes sense to be thinking, “Are those windows secure? Should I put in an alarm system?” – you know, that kind of thing.
But did you know that most home invasions happen when people simply shove their way past your front door?
Or that most garage doors can simply be rocked off balance to unseat the lock bar, letting anybody open them?
Your front door alone is vulnerable for a lot of reasons, and that’s why I want to tell you about the fact that…
1. The Door Itself Is Flimsy
Many “hollow core” doors can be kicked through.
They’re weak and easily smashed.
Most people never realize this.
2. Your Door Can Be “Loided”
Many people don’t think to lock their doors when they’re home, or they just lock the knob and don’t use the deadbolt.
Locks like that can easily be picked with a “shove knife”, a tool that lets you trip the latch through the gap between the frame and the door.
The technique is also called “loiding,” referring to “celluloid” — like shoving a credit card into the gap above the lock.
3. There Are Tools Anyone Can Buy To Defeat Your Lock
Even if you DO use your deadbolt, right now on eBay you can buy sets of “lockpick” keys that let you open just about ANY common home, filing cabinet, and even automobile locks (for older cars, anyway).
Any thief can buy these, which means your lock won’t stop him for more than the few seconds it takes to use the tool he bought online.
Are you worried yet?
I know I was, when I learned these things.
The good news is, there are simple ways to permanently solve these vulnerabilities, and make your home a “fortress” without turning it into a prison.
I’ve been following the recommendations in the Green Beret Home Defense Security Checklist.
It showed me how to avoid the critical mistakes almost ALL homeowners make when trying to protect their homes.
It also helps you identify weak points in your home security – the ones that criminals look for.
Better yet, you can fix all these security risks WITHOUT costly projects and unnecessary changes.
I know I sleep a lot better at night having followed this simple, easy-to-use checklist.
You will, too.
