August 29th, 2005: Katrina was a hard lesson for many of us. The Cat 5 hurricane made landfall a decade ago, and most people know the loss of human life and property were tragic: Over 1800 people died in the days following the storm, and the coast suffered $1.25 billion in damage.
What most people don’t know, however, was the animal death toll. As waters rose and support systems failed, over a quarter million pets died. That’s 250,000 family members left behind.
